to cave or not

hmmmm, anyone in for iditabike?

so, any day now i will be packing my 29er frame and sending it off to mike truelove to do some modifications on the brake mount. he is going to cut and weld on a new rear brake mount for me that will be more adjustable than the current mount. here is a picture of the type of mount that i am having added, the curve of the bottom slot makes it easier to adjust the brake as the wheel moves back and forth, as well as removing the wheel.

as there is no prefab mount that mike can add he needs to cut a mount himself based on drawings that i provide (yikes!).

the question is, do i have him add a hanger at the same time. one part of me likes the idea of having the option of gears (the part of me that wants to see if gears would be faster and more beneficial for some races), while the other part of me is totally repulsed by the idea of having anything to do with gears when it comes to mountain biking.

a decision will need to be made soon.

Cave.

It just means you can use the bike for more things.

I volunteer to be your reality check as to whether you "need" gears for a given event. We all know they take some of the fun out of riding.

Why don't you just put the gears on, but don't maintain them. That way your gears or singlespeed bike decision will be based purely on chance. I personally am starting to move away from this method as it usually has not worked out so well for me.

I suggest you do not cave. But you really need to be more consistent. If one gear is better than 27 or 30, whatever the case may be, then you should really follow the logic all the way to its proper conclusion and pick uo one of these. As it stands, your apparently principalled stance leaves you open to ridicule. Critics love the smell of inconsistency.

Yikes. That spelling is atrocious. You'd think I'd been hanging around with the president or the poosher. In any case, uo = up; principalled = principled.

Cave.

or i never want to hear you talk about how you may have been faster on gears, or it was not a single speed friendly course.

dr h. - semantics, i was thinking plural vs singular. i guess, technically you are right and i should go sans drive train but then i would have even more things to whine about to luc.

thanks all for your input - i am going to cave, mostly because i can now acquire more bike stuff without actually buying a new bike. see - i am limited to 5 bikes by mrs. dr. if i go over that limit then she buys herself a grand piano for home. mrs. dr. has the same taste in piano's as i do in bikes, buy good quality stuff; the problem is that a good quality grand is $30,000 - $50,000...

1st. Buy the Grand! That is a no-brainer. It is just money.

2nd Get the gear and use them or don’t. We will all think the same of you. You will still be you.

3rd Be happy, and spread the love.

Gears? Single Speed? Road? Mountain? Cross? BMX?
