yes, that is the longest head tube in manitoba. so long that none of the shops headset presses would work, the top cup had to be persuaded into place with the only tool left in the shop that would work
after
musing about beer, bikes, and bread. well, maybe not so much on beer, but definately on bikes and bread and other issues that i fancy - and not necessarily in that order

Nice ride Hal!
That head tube may even be larger than my seat tubes are.... but 18lbs awesome!
You are lucky to be able to race that bike so close to home.. yup, that was a whine.
Greg,
if you host them, they will come.
nice ride Hal!
Sweet ride Hal and apparently it rode well yesterday and day before races. :)
I'd like to step up and get a single speed cross bike. Where to begin? I suppose Woodcock Cycle would have suggestion :)And what cost?

That must be illegal in some way. Where is my rule book. Well on the bright side I will have something to blame other then my weak legs when you kick my ass at provincials.
Sweet bike!
Dave, go weigh your new frame and fork...weak legs...haha
thanks for the feedback guys.
greg - i want to see you ride my bike. re: the headtube. the steerer tube is uncut and all that i could add was one 2mm spacer (along with the hanger).
paddy - looking forward to seeing your spot frame, always had a soft spot for spot (the canadian spot at least).
tim - many options out there (tomek, dave d, and paddy are the ones to talk to about these things) if you want to build up a complete bike surly and bianchi (you would need to go to the usa for that) are good places to start. you might look at the specialized singlecross (http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=38442&eid=123). you could use what you have and use a chain tensioner, or build up a wheel with a white industries eno (http://www.whiteind.com/rearhubs/singlespeedhubs.html). if you are looking to do the custom build thing the skys the limit. costs: cheap probably under $300 for a surly hub, half decent rim, spokes, and a chain tensioner. custom build; you can see what i would have spent if i had to pay retail for everything in this post (http://beerbikesbread.blogspot.com/2008/10/so-you-want-to-build-bike.html) and you could certainly go higher or lower than this.
dave - dude, your bike weighs 3 pound less than mine, your legs are stronger, and your younger (yes i will play the age card) even though we are in the same age category
wow, sweet. that thing must be even lighter than my $20 Norco.
yup
Tim i have a surly...
but you're too tall...
The Spot's goin' in for a repaint Tues..patience
Hal I think you bike is the only one I've seen that needed to rear brake cables
'you' should be 'you're'
&
'to' should be 'two'
&
and I should be sleeping
True: My bike is ‘somewhat’ lighter but certainly not 14 lbs! You have kicked my ass on a number of occasions. (have you forgotten Pinawa? When you demonstrated 'Hal’s Law'... I had no answer. Man you passed me like I was going backwards! Don’t talk to me about Beaver Fever – weakness is only an excuse. Have you forgotten Woodhaven when I couldn’t even suck your wheel! Have you forgotten the countless other races?) I am only giving credit where it is due!
True: My legs are stronger… all that muscle is just a waste of time!!!
True: You are ‘slightly’ older. Slightly! Older = craftier, wiser, & cook better bread.
True: I never count you out of a race. Too many times I have knocked myself out; looked over my shoulder only to find you getting ready to kick my ass.
True: It is a “Sweat Bike!”
Hal. If I rode that rig I would loose the use of something.... hmmm, not that I would notice :-(
Thanks for the comments. Just lusting after your bikes. I'm shouldering wayyy too much weight
Luc, whadya mean, I'm taller, lol, 5'7" 145lbs I am
